This Cookie Policy explains how A Place In The Garden ("we", "us", "our") uses cookies and similar technologies on www.aplaceinthegarden.co.uk (the "site"). It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal data more generally.

Our site is hosted on Shopify. Some of the technologies described below are set by Shopify or by other third parties whose services we use.

1. What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file placed on your device when you visit a website. Cookies let a site remember your actions and preferences over time, and allow us and our partners to understand how the site is used.

We also use related technologies that work in a similar way — including pixels, tracking scripts, local storage and session storage. In this policy we refer to all of these simply as "cookies".

Cookies may be:

  • First-party — set by us or by Shopify on our behalf.
  • Third-party — set by another organisation, such as Google or Meta.
  • Session — deleted when you close your browser.
  • Persistent — kept for a set period, or until you delete them.

2. Your consent

We only place cookies that are strictly necessary to run the site without asking you first. Everything else — analytics, personalisation and advertising cookies — is set only if you agree.

When you first visit, you'll see a cookie banner allowing you to accept or reject non-essential cookies. The banner is provided by Consentmo, a consent management tool, which records your choice and signals it to the other services running on the site. Your preferences are stored in cookies called cookieconsent_status and cookieconsent_preferences_disabled, so we don't have to ask again on every page.

You can review or change your choice at any time using the "Cookie settings" link in our footer, or by following the instructions in section 6 below.

Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it, and refusing non-essential cookies won't stop you browsing or buying from us.

3. Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies are required for the site to function — they keep your basket working, secure your session, process payments and remember your cookie choices. They can't be switched off, and we don't need your consent to use them.

Our payment providers — including PayPal, Klarna, Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay — may also set cookies during checkout for fraud prevention and to complete your transaction. These are governed by their own privacy and cookie notices.

4. Analytics and performance cookies

These help us understand how visitors find and use the site, which pages are popular, and where things aren't working, so we can improve them. The information is aggregated and used for statistical purposes.

Most of these are deployed through Google Tag Manager.

Cookie Set by Purpose Duration
_shopify_y Shopify Distinguishes individual visitors for Shopify's analytics 1 year

Google Analytics data may be transferred outside the UK. Google acts as our processor for analytics and applies appropriate safeguards to those transfers. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites using Google's browser add-on.

5. Advertising and marketing cookies

These cookies let us and our partners show you relevant products, measure how our campaigns perform, and follow up on items left in your basket. They typically build a profile of your interests based on your browsing.

Cookie Set by Purpose Duration
_fbp Meta (Facebook / Instagram) Measures advertising performance and enables retargeting 90 days
_gcl_au Google Ads Attributes sales and enquiries to Google adverts 90 days

Where our pages include embedded content — such as the YouTube videos on our homepage, or our Calendly booking tool for show garden viewings — that content may set its own cookies once loaded. We recommend reading the relevant provider's cookie notice if you'd like more detail.

Our catalogue request and trade application forms are hosted by a third-party form provider, which may set cookies to prevent duplicate submissions and detect spam.

7. Your rights

Cookies that identify you or your device count as personal data under UK data protection law. You have the right to access, correct, erase or object to the processing of that data, and to withdraw your consent at any time. Section 6 explains how to withdraw consent; our Privacy Policy explains how to exercise your other rights.
